Almont is the sixth oldest village in the State of Michigan, Almont was established in 1833, by a settler named Daniel Black. The first village meeting was held in his tavern. Officers elected were: Supervisor and Justice of the Peace, Treasurer, Assessors, and Highway Commissioner. The name Almont was established in 1846, it was in honor of a Mexican diplomat, Ambassador and General Juan V. Almonte. The village was incorporated with a population of 818 in 1855.
Resurveying and replatting of the village occurred in 1879. Soon after came the opening of the town hall in 1885. In 1920 the Earle Memorial Monument commemorating the construction of M-53 was erected. This was followed up by the construction of a Municipal building which was completed in 1979. Ten years later in 1989 the sewage treatment plant was constructed at a cost of 4.7 million dollars.
