The Armada Free Public Library opened on August 1, 1901 on the second floor of the Barrows Block, on the Southwest corner of Main Street. Although it only had 87 books on its shelves, it was a beginning, and while books remain the backbone of the Library, we are continually improving with the use of technology. A whole world of information is available at the Library by using online databases or browsing the World Wide Web. We also have an automated card catalog that can be accessed at the library or from the convenience of your home or office computer on the internet.
When the Library first opened in 1901, Elizabeth Pomeroy was appointed as the first librarian
and from the beginning, the Library was committed to its role of community service. In the early years of the library, conferences, clubs meetings, children's hours and civic gatherings were held at the library making it an important part of the community.
From 1906-1913, the Library Board spent much of its time attempting to get a Carnegie grant
to construct a library building. In December of 1913 the Board's efforts finally paid off with a grant for
$8000 and construction of the new Carnegie building began and it was opened on April 3, 1915. After 14
years the Library finally had a home.
On April 1, 2001 the Library celebrated its 100th birthday with a celebration program that
included a flag raising presentation by Boy Scout Troop 485, and recognition of long service to three past
Board Members, refreshments, and resolutions. The Library also had a Pictorial Cancellation Stamp created courtesy of the United States Post Office, and a postal worker was available to specially hand-stamp postcards or other mail items with the unique cancellation stamp.
Anyone who comes to our beautiful Library is sure to be impressed with all of our renovations and
