BROWN CITY ROTARY CLUB

"Service Above Self"

Those three words describe the purpose of Rotary. Founded on February 23, 1905 in Chicago by Paul Harris and three other business men, Rotary International is an organization of more than 1.2 million men and women who simply believe in helping others. Today, members represent 163 countries worldwide. It is the world's oldest and most prestigious service club in the world.

The Brown City Rotary Club was established March 15, 1957. Businessman Lloyd Burger served as the first president. Several charter members are still active in the club.

Currently, the Brown City Rotary Club has 23 active members plus three honorary members. The group meets at 7:30 AM each Thursday morning at the Harrington Inn for breakfast. Weekly programs offer the opportunity to listen to different speakers and a variety of timely topics, both locally and globally. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

Since inception, members have dedicated themselves to their community and their world. Through Scholarship programs and individual donations, Brown City Rotarians have helped make higher education a reality for a number of local youth. Rotarians have raised money for projects in the Park. The Community Auction, held annually the first Saturday in September, has been a major fundraiser for the community for over 30 years. Rotary's annual Pancake Supper, each February, has raised over $34,000.00 for Hospice. Rotary International has pledged itself to the eradication of polio throughout the world. Local Rotarians have donated both time and money toward that goal, and because of Rotary's phenomenal support, it is projected that the world will be polio-free by the end of 2005.

Officers for 2002-2003 are: President: Doug Muxlow; VP/President Elect: Jeff Liebler; Treasurer: Larry Thiemkey; Secretary: Linda Faulconer; Ass't Treasurer: Mike Ford; Board members: John Murray and Dale Eschenberg.

Brown City's Rotary Club is in District 6330, an international district with 63 clubs in Michigan and Ontario, Canada.  Call (810)346-3016 for information.
