will meet your needs. Home additions can be small and simple or
large and complex, it all depends on what your needs are when
designing and building it. The biggest problems homeowners run
into when designing their home addition is trying to squeeze too
much into the space, or not having a clear enough idea of why
they need the addition in the first place.
Here are some design tips to help you with your home addition
plan:
Figure out exactly what you will be using the new space for.
Just having an idea that you need more room is not going to be
good enough. You need to have a clear idea of what activities
will happen in that space and who will be using it. This will
help you determine your main design priorities. If you skip this
step you run the risk of designing a home addition that will
not, ultimately, meet the household’s needs.
Where the room addition will be in relation to the rest of
the house will have a large impact on how the space is designed.
If it will become part of a main living area and the flow will need
to match perfectly, meaning both the construction and décor will
have to be in keeping with the adjoining area. If it is going to
be separated in some way from the rest of the house those
considerations will not matter as much. In terms of design you
will have a cleaner drawing board to work from.
Think about the traffic flow through the new area. Look at
how people will access the space and walk through the room. Make
sure not to block the flow.
Plan your lighting needs early in the process. Natural light
is always preferable. Think about ways to maximize the amount of
available natural light through window size and positioning.
What other activities will be happening in the space will
largely determine the other lighting needs. Planning ahead will
make designing an attractive, and functional, lighting scheme
much easier.
